Blend: 50% Barrel Aged Merlot (New American Oak), 50% Seyval
Tasting Notes: Aromas and flavours of strawberry, currant and dark cherry are complimented by rich notes of toasted oak and dark chocolate. Nice present tannins with an off dry finish.
Roasted balsamic beet salad, cold cut sandwiches with mustard, roasted duck breast with figs or morels and wild mushroom dishes.
Merlot’s (Mare-LOW) fame is founded on its partnership with Cabernet Sauvignon, its reputation as a solo performer has been earned more recently. Originating in Bordeaux France Merlot is now seen in vineyards across the globe. This early ripening variety produces soft rich wines that are often described as ‘fleshy’. It is capable of producing wines that are full bodied and tannic, but the majority are produced to be friendly, soft, fruit forward wines. The majority of the aromas and flavours are red fruits such as cherry, strawberry, raspberry and currant. Other complex characteristics like coffee, tobacco, earth and herb can be found as well. With oak influence flavours like cedar, spice, vanilla and smoke develop. To create a softer style red this oak barrel aged merlot was blended with Seyval Blanc. This lightened up the Merlot beautifully to create a very easy drinking red wine. This wine can also be served chilled if desired.
